I'm currently an Associate Arts Professor at The Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University. I am the area head of the digital media curriculum, and teach a foundation course called "Communications Lab" as well as an animation course entitled "Methods of Motion". I also head an initiative in Technology and Social Justice which is funded through the Nathan Cummings Foundation. Through this initiative we have an Internship Program (our current non-profit partners include Vision Education and Media, the Educational Video Center, The Lower East Side Girl's Club, the Adaptive Design Association, and Witness. Previous collaborators included: The Fund for the City of New York, Picture Projects, The Producer's Project, and Probono.net.) We also have an Assistive Technology Lab, which is a collaboration with the Department of Occupational Therapy at NYU, specifically with Professor Anita Perr. Through this program, we teach a course entitled "Developing Assistive Technology" and work with clinical partners (including the Rusk Institute, Elizabeth Seton Pediatric, Metropolitan Hospital) to have clinicians and designers work together to identify a clinical problem and create a technology solution. A link to student projects is forthcoming. Other projects include hosting RJ Cooper for three days of evaluations and demonstrations, as well as partnering with The Baruch Computer Center for Visually Impaired People and Helen Keller Services for the Blind to host a colloquium entitled "Vision Rehab: It's More than a Magnifier." You can see photos here. In addition, in the spring of 2007 we partnered with Xavier University's Department of Art in New Orleans to develop workshops and curriculum around digital storytelling and participatory media through a series of New York/New Orleans exchanges. You can see photos here and on flickr. Previous courses I have taught: "Video for New Media" "Creating WWW Sites," "Social Applications of Internet Technologies" and "Assistive Technology and Social Applications: A Collaboration with Montefiore Children's Hospital". All my current syllabi are online. Prior to being at ITP full-time, I was an adjunct and worked with a variety of non-profit organizations, including The Fund for the City of New York (from 1991-1995 as a consultant with the Nonprofit Computer Exchange, then from 1996-1998 as the Director of the Internet Academy and as a developer with the Center for Internet Innovation), The Jacob Riis Settlement House (as the Director of the Center for Technology from 1994-1995), PASA (Positive Attitudes Solutions and Actions), the Liberty Partnership Program, and Playing to Win. I also continue to work individually with organizations (currently the Adaptive Design Organization and STEPS to End Family Violence. |
