So, it started with one cat. A black kitten. She was living in my back alley and I started taking care of her. Then she got pregnant and I wished I had done more than just feed her. One night, I heard cat screams. When I came down to find her, she was no longer pregnant. But, I couldn't locate her litter. I looked for weeks. Then at the fifth week, I opened the door and found that she had deposited 3 small kittens by the steps. Two were gray and one was black. All day long she kept moving the kittens into our path. So, I knew she was asking for help. The next day my friend Stacy came over and we captured the mother and kittens. We put the kittens in a carrier and Stacy hid behind it and pretended to be a kitten in distress which somehow tricked the mother. She walked right in. We took the train and brought them all out to the Little Shelter. All were adopted. I'm sorry I don't have photos. Once I saw the kittens I could tell by their big grey heads who the father was. And so I was determined to do something to help him. I started feeding him. Two more cats appeared. Then I had to stop because the landlord didn't want me feeding all the cats. So, I got them all into carriers and took them to the Animal Health Center in Manhattan. There they were treated for parasites, were vaccinated, and neutered. Below are some photos of them. |

Cat #2: Two (aka Booboo) melts my heart. When he first appeared he was terribly injured and petrified and blind in one eye. After several weeks of daily coaxing and feeding he grew very trusting of me. He would loudly greet me and enjoy hours of headrubs. But, getting vetted and neutered traumatized him. He lived in my office for six months but never adapted to being indoors and was clearly unhappy. BUT, life is good for Two. He is now a well cared for barn cat upstate. He gets to run on many acres of farm land and play with other cats. Thank you, Caroline! Here are more Two photos. |
