2002-Present: ITP: Technology and Social Justice:
At ITP I head an initiative in Technology and Social Justice which is funded through the Nathan Cummings Foundation. Through this initiative we have an Internship Program (our current non-profit partners include Vision Education and Media, the Educational Video Center, The Lower East Side Girl's Club, the Adaptive Design Association, and Witness. Previous collaborators included: The Fund for the City of New York, Picture Projects, The Producer's Project, and Probono.net.) We also have an Assistive Technology Lab, which is a collaboration with the Department of Occupational Therapy at NYU, specifically with Professor Anita Perr. Through this program, we teach a course entitled "Developing Assistive Technology" and work with clinical partners (including the Rusk Institute, Elizabeth Seton Pediatric, Metropolitan Hospital) to have clinicians and designers work together to identify a clinical need and create a technology solution. A link to student projects is forthcoming. Other projects have included hosting RJ Cooper for three days of evaluations and demonstrations, as well as partnering with The Baruch Computer Center for Visually Impaired People and Helen Keller Services for the Blind to host a colloquium entitled "Vision Rehab: It's More than a Magnifier." You can see photos here. In addition, in the spring of 2007 we partnered with Xavier University's Department of Art in New Orleans to develop workshops and curriculum around digital storytelling and participatory media through a series of New York/New Orleans exchanges. Faculty included Shawn Van Every, Patricia Sills, and Ron Bechet. You can see photos here and on flickr. |
